The Consulate

A play with songs

Clerk #2 is a passionate young woman who dreams of becoming a diplomat in the US.

Beginning as a low-ranking clerk in her homeland’s consulate, Clerk #2’s hopes of rising in the foreign service are challenged by the office’s all-male leadership club that prevents women from climbing the diplomatic ladder. Clerk #2 pushes back against this systemic injustice, seeking comradery among the other women at the office, but every step she takes in the direction of her dream makes her superiors more and more hostile.

Told through a series of musical vignettes each scene of the play ends in a cabaret song, giving characters a “close-up” in front of the audience.
